Go fetch the creme de cacao, Maxine needs a Grasshopper!
Anyone obsessed with Palm Royale on Apple TV knows Maxine (Kristen Wiig) loves her Grasshoppers and her naive husband Douglas has a penchant for Mai Tais in the pool.
The writers of Palm Royale undoubtedly inserted cocktails into the Season 1 script to create a 1969 time capsule—and chose the Grasshopper as Maxine’s signature drink as part of her character development.
Think about it.
It’s bright and optimistically sweet (Who doesn’t love one?), a sweet and creamy cocktail that seamlessly coordinates with Maxine’s cheerful dresses on those luscious vintage Palm Beach sets. Not to mention that the dessert drink is a far less sophisticated call at the Club than snooty Norma’s “deliciously dry” Martini.
No societal judgements here! It was certainly good enough for our prim and proper grandmothers—boozy mint chocolate ice cream in a glass!
With its festive hue, the Grasshopper cocktail hops back around in popularity during the holidays, but thanks to Maxine, we’re feeling Palm Beach fancy sipping one in our vintage maxi dresses year round. (Season 2 Watch Party, anyone?)
A drink made “Royale,” in cocktail terms, implies it’s topped with sparkling wine, but here Milk Punch elevated the classic with a measure of Green Chartreuse. The herbaceous liqueur pairs beautifully with creme de menthe and cacao, making it a smash hit at your next soirée or dinner party.
Allow the Grasshopper to transport you to a barstool at the ornate Dellacorte mansion, awash in green itself, with Robert (Ricky Martin) serving you the evocative elixir, of course.
