Holiday Spice Sangria

Heartwarming flavors make a festive seasonal sangria!

Ingredients

  • 2 bottles fruity red wine such as Pinot Noir
  • 1 cup Calvados (French Apple Brandy) or brandy
  • 1 cup orange juice or apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup spiced syrup, recipe follows
  • 3 apples, cored and chopped
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • Ginger beer to top
  • Cinnamon sticks for garnish

Instructions

Soak fruit in brandy overnight.

Transfer to a large pitcher. Add remaining ingredients except ginger beer and stir to combine. Chill.

Serve over ice and top with a splash of ginger beer.

Garnish with a spoonful of soaked fruit, fresh herbs and a cinnamon stick.

 

Spiced Syrup

1 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
2 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
6 allspice berries
3 cloves
1 whole star anise pod
1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns

Combine in a saucepan and heat just below boiling. Simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain, discarding solids, into a glass bottle or jar with lid. Keep covered and chilled for up to 2 weeks.

Choose 50% less sugar orange juice or freshly-squeezed.
